Replacing or disconnecting a battery sounds simple, but on a modern vehicle it can cause a surprising number of electrical quirks. Most are normal and settle down; a few point to a battery that was not installed or coded correctly.

What Can Happen

What can happen after a battery is replaced or disconnected

When a battery is disconnected, modules lose stored power and some of the values they have learned. When a new battery is fitted, the battery management system may not know it has changed. Common effects include:

  • Warning lights on the dashboard after the change
  • Radio or security code required after power was lost
  • Electric windows needing a reset or reinitialisation
  • Clock and settings lost
  • Stop-start system no longer working
  • Steering angle or system relearn required
  • Idle behaviour slightly different after power loss
  • AGM or EFB battery type not matched to the vehicle
  • Battery registration or coding not carried out where required
  • Incorrect battery specification fitted
  • Poor or loose terminal connection
  • Low voltage during the replacement causing modules to log faults

Clear or Not?

When lights clear after driving — and when they don’t

Some warning lights that appear after a battery change clear on their own after a drive cycle, as modules relearn their values and confirm the systems are working. This is normal relearn behaviour.

Lights that stay on after several drives, or that come with a change in how the vehicle drives, are different. They may point to a battery that was not coded where it needed to be, an incorrect specification, a poor terminal connection, or a genuine fault that needs diagnosis. Battery types and coding vary by vehicle

It is easy to assume every modern car needs battery coding, or that none of them do. Neither is true. Many stop-start vehicles use AGM or EFB batteries and require the new battery to be registered to the management system; many others do not.
