Clicking When You Try to Start

A single click or rapid clicking when you turn the key is often associated with a starter motor or battery problem. The click is typically the starter solenoid engaging but the motor itself not turning — which can be caused by insufficient battery power, poor connections, a faulty starter motor, or a wiring issue.

We test the battery, the connections and the starter circuit to work out which of these is the actual cause, rather than assuming the starter motor has failed.

Slow Cranking

If the engine turns over slowly when you try to start it, the cause could be a weak battery, poor connections, a failing starter motor, or even a mechanical issue creating excess drag. Slow cranking needs proper diagnosis — replacing the starter on a vehicle with a weak battery or corroded connections won’t solve the problem.

Battery Warning Light

The battery warning light on the dashboard typically points to a charging-system issue rather than a battery problem. If the light stays on while the engine is running, the alternator may not be charging the battery properly. However, the warning can also be triggered by wiring faults, poor connections or a failed voltage regulator.

Charging Faults

Charging-system faults can show up in several ways — the battery warning light, a battery that keeps going flat, dim headlights at idle, or the vehicle cutting out after being driven. We test alternator output, the wiring between alternator and battery, and how the system behaves under load to find the cause.

Starter Motor Faults

Starter motor faults can range from complete failure — no response at all when you turn the key — to intermittent operation where the starter works sometimes and not others. We test the starter circuit, including the solenoid, the wiring and the connections, to determine whether the starter motor itself is at fault or whether the issue lies elsewhere.

Alternator Diagnosis

Alternator diagnosis involves measuring output voltage and current, checking that the alternator is charging the battery correctly under different load conditions, and inspecting the wiring and connections between the alternator and battery. We also check for parasitic drains that might be masking a charging-system issue.

Repair or Replacement?

In some cases, a charging or starting fault can be repaired without replacing the whole component — for example, cleaning corroded connections, repairing damaged wiring, or sorting a faulty connection. In other cases, the component itself has failed and replacement is the practical option.

We diagnose the fault first and then explain whether repair or replacement is the right next step. We don’t assume a component needs replacing without confirming it’s actually at fault.

If a starter motor or alternator needs replacing, the part may not be available straight away. We don’t guarantee component replacement at the vehicle location — parts may need ordering, and some replacements need facilities or equipment that aren’t practical at the roadside.
